Brooke Shields on Aging: Finding Empowerment, Embracing Change, and Feeling Fabulous at 59

At 59, Brooke Shields is embracing her age with confidence, but she admits it wasn’t always this way. Like many women, she grew up fearing the aging process, influenced by society’s obsession with youth. Shields believed that getting older meant losing power and freedom. “We’re taught that this is the end of the road for us,” she reflects, but her experience has shown her otherwise. In fact, after turning 50, Shields discovered a sense of freedom and empowerment she never expected.

These realizations are at the core of her upcoming book, “Brooke Shields Is Not Allowed to Get Old: Thoughts on Aging as a Woman,” where she explores her personal journey with aging and the societal pressures women face to maintain eternal youth. Shields, who once feared growing older, now partners with pharmaceutical company GSK to educate adults over 50 about health risks, like shingles, and the importance of staying informed about vaccination options.

Overcoming Physical Setbacks

Despite her new outlook on aging, Shields has faced physical challenges. In 2021, she broke her femur in a freak accident while using a balance board, an injury that has left her dealing with ongoing pain and balance issues. Reflecting on the experience, Shields admits she wasn’t prepared for the injury, but getting a clear understanding of her health helped her feel more in control. Her advice to others is simple: don’t hesitate to ask questions about your health. Whether it’s vaccinations, bone density, or any other concern, knowledge can empower you to make the right decisions for your well-being.

Navigating Emotional Challenges

Emotionally, one of Shields’ biggest concerns was becoming an empty nester. With her daughters, Rowan (20) and Grier (18), moving out, she feared how she would adjust. However, she now finds joy in watching them grow and thrive. Grier, for instance, recently walked in New York Fashion Week, a moment of pride for Shields, who never experienced that side of modeling. “She was committed and strong about it,” Shields says, marveling at her daughter’s confidence and determination.

Shields has spent decades in the entertainment industry, but she’s not content to sit back and wait for opportunities to come to her. Actively pursuing projects, from writing books to developing creative ventures, she remains determined to keep pushing forward. Shields is especially intrigued by the emerging trend of older women being paired with younger men in movies, a dynamic she finds exciting.

In her personal life, Shields has been married to screenwriter Chris Henchy for over 20 years. She acknowledges that maintaining a successful marriage requires effort, especially as both partners grow and evolve over time. Shields emphasizes the importance of communication, humor, and not letting small grievances fester. “I want to grow old with this person,” she says, describing how they navigate their changing dynamics while keeping the connection strong.

A New Chapter

Shields’ perspective on aging has shifted dramatically. No longer afraid of growing older, she is focusing on maintaining her health, nurturing her relationships, and continuing to pursue her passions. With a mix of humor and wisdom, Shields shows that life after 50 can be not just fulfilling but fabulous.

In her own words, Shields sums up her philosophy: “We sometimes change and grow at different paces, but the people we were when we fell in love are still in there somewhere.” Whether it’s managing marriage or health challenges, Shields is embracing the journey with grace and confidence.
